Disability solution

Imagine denying an entire pool of talent the opportunity to contribute and help grow our economy? As a society, we are all differently able, sometimes physically and sometimes mentally, and must recognise the importance of acceptance. Disability awareness is very important when it comes to breaking stereotypes and overcoming preconceptions regarding disabilities.

Persons with disabilities share the same goals and aspirations as those without, but at times require specific support measures to be made available to enable them to participate fully and achieve equitable outcomes.

At Qunu we fully embrace the notion that a diverse workplace is a stronger workplace. Our radical disability solutions can place a person with disabilities in their ideal position, benefitting your business, the candidate, and our economy. Disability awareness in the workplace involves educating both employers and employees.

The purpose of awareness is to create a better understanding of disability as a whole in respect of the Employment Equity Act.

Section 1 of the Employment Equity Act 55 of 1998, as amended, defines people with disabilities as “people who have a long -term or recurring physical or mental impairment, which substantially limits their prospects of entry into, or advancement in, employment.”

Our disability solutions include education on understanding some of the different types of disabilities as well as promoting a knowledgeable workforce of the impact that language and etiquette can have in preventing discrimination in the workplace and promoting inclusivity.

Disability policy and legislation in South Africa

The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa guarantees every citizen the right to equality.

The National Development Plan (NDP), approved in 2012, envisages a country by 2030 which has eliminated poverty and has reduced inequality, a “country wherein all citizens have the capabilities to grasp the ever-broadening opportunities available.”

One of Qunu’s objectives of disability management in the public service, in addition to ensuring inclusion in the workplace, is to ensure equal access to employment, training and skills development opportunities, as well as career pathing of people with disabilities.
